How do flip flop ICs work?

Flip flop ICs are most commonly used to store data in electronic devices such as computers. Flip flops are a non-linear electronic circuit, in which the output is fed back into the application to be processed alongside the input. A flip flop IC is gated, so the output can only be altered by an active signal.

These circuits operate using the input signal combined with the prior output signal, meaning their outputs are defined by their previous state.

Which type of flip flop IC do I need?

There are four main types of flip flop ICs to choose from.

  • JK type flip flop – this flip flop contains a clock input circuit that stops an incorrect output condition.
  • D type flip flop – this is commonly used as the output is dependent on the rising edge of the clock. If the input changes at other times, the output remains the same.
  • SR flip flop – this is one of the simplest flip flops, with logic gates that ensure a stable output, even when the input is switched off.
  • T flip flop – these are similar to JK type flip flops, but only have a single input. Essentially, both J and K inputs are combined together to create one input alongside the clock input.
