Logic Comparators

Logic comparators are electronic circuits used to compare two binary numbers. If you use A vs B as an example, digital comparators test whether A is equal to, less or greater than B. There are two main types of logic comparator used in electronics, which are equality and magnitude comparators.

Which logic comparator do I need?

There are several different types of logic comparators across the range. The main two types are equality and magnitude comparators. Both serve a slightly different purpose.

An equality comparator is often used in applications such as electronic security systems, as there is only one correct input. Where multiple numbers are inputted into the system, the device will compare the input against a pre-determined answer.

A magnitude comparator has additional outputs that an equality comparator does not. While it is able to indicate equality, it can also determine whether a binary number is greater than or less than another. Here are some of the different types of digital comparators:

  • 1 Bit Comparator – this is a single bit comparator that compares two bits. There are two inputs for two single bit numbers.
  • 2 Bit Comparator – this compares two binary numbers of two bits. This comparator establishes whether two numbers are equal to, greater than or less than one another using four inputs and three outputs.
  • 4 Bit Comparator – this compares two binary numbers of four bits. There are eight inputs for the two four bit binary numbers.

What applications can they be used for?

They can be used in various applications, typically where systems need to compare variables to a specific set value. This may be devices such as thermostats where the temperature needs to be regulated. It can also be used in electronic systems which are operated using password controls or biometrics.
