What is PoE?

PoE technology carries power and data along a single cable to PoE-capable devices. PoE simplifies wiring requirements and makes it possible to position devices and access points wherever they’re needed without being tethered to an outlet.

PoE delivery is intelligent, reliable and scalable too, and is commonly used to power wireless access points, IP cameras and VoIP systems.

What is a PoE controller?

PoE controllers manage the distribution of DC power and data between power source equipment and powered devices in PoE systems. Used to detect and classify powered devices, distribute -48V power and protect against faults, PoE controllers offer power management functionality and the ability to deliver power and data through one cable. Some are even able to manage power autonomously.

The devices come in the form of integrated circuits or standalone modules, and typically feature indicators, circuit protection, temperature monitoring and serial interface support. When choosing your PoE controller it’s important to consider the number of ports you need, as well as the input and output voltage and power, data rate and operating temperature.

How does a PoE controller work?

The component has two parts – PoE switches and adapters. A DC terminal block powers the former and transfers power and data through an ethernet cable. PoE adapters are made up of base and terminal units, with the base connecting to the power outlet and the terminal through an ethernet cable.

The ports on a PoE controller wait for the host’s instructions in manual mode and detect and classify the attached powered devices in semi-automatic mode. Their status is then reported to the host which turns power on.
